Favourite movies seen through 2006

I don’t tend to get to see new movies. But I more than more than make up for it with oldies, the way I see it, If I haven’t seen it, it’s new to me.

So I’ll list my favourite 50 movies I watched (for the first time) during 2006.

  1. Il Buono, il brutto, il cattivo
“The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”

I had always avoided westerns, but i’ve since discovered that the spaghetti sort are freaky weirdly beautiful. This one in particular is an explosive ride and you don’t know whether to laugh or cry at the immensity of how incredible it is. Above all, the best thing about his is the amazing score by Ennio Morricone.
  2. Manhattan
Dunno why I hadn’t seen this sooner, I love some of Woody Allan’s (and hate others). Maybe i’d dismissed this one because I figured it was one of the arty farty ones, being black and white and all. Turns out is a beautiful romantic, and extremely touching.
  3. Mitt liv som hund
    “My Life as a Dog”

Possibly the ultimate coming of age film, certainly one of the most famous. Anypoop, it’s adorable, offbeat and touching.
  4. If….
A classic british public school romp about some kids turning against the school, ending in an is it real, is it fantasy massecre. Strangely, it still hasn’t been released on DVD.
  5. Bonnie and Clyde
Crooks in love, on the run. It’s fun!
  6. Au revoir, les enfants
    “Goodbye, Children”

Touching, and upsetting recount of a child at a prep school befriending a jewish boy who is being harboured by the headmaster of the school, in ww2 occupied france.
  7. Death in Gaza
Documentary, following the people of gaza, in particularly the effect of the troubles on the children. The filming ends up being it’s own story as a tragedy befalls the film-makers.
  8. Me and You and Everyone We Know
Quirky indie film, interwoven lives and a romance. It’s very good! But you can’t describe it without it sounding suck. ))<>((
  9. Mandragora
Possibly one of the grittiest films I have ever seen. About rent boys in prague, getting into a bit of trouble. Totally devastating.
  10. Tonari no Totoro
    “My Neighbor Totoro”

A lot of anime’s are adorable, but this is the cherry. Cute from start to finish, heart-warming. Awwwww!!! And I think the totoro guy became studio ghibli’s mascot?
