Douglas Coupland jPod

Finally got around to reading Douglas Coupland’s jPod. It’s a weird ass piece of work.

Doug occasionally does this, he goes all out obscenely daft, it reminded me a little of “All Families are Psychotic” he’ll drop the odd aside into the story that makes you go “OMG can he really do that?”  There’s a running joke in jPod where he would occasionally have a character say something like “God this is like something Douglas Coupland would write about” and I couldn’t quite decide if that was clever and funny or a bit dumb.  Then it got even dafter and he even appears in the novel himself and makes his character an obnoxious bully.

On an unrelated note, has anybody else noticed that the BBC seem to be using scare tactics to encourage people into taking up digital tv?  A while ago they ran an advert where this big floating heads were talking about the virtues, but these floating heads were made up of smaller heads and it was totally freaky.  They ended up pulling it becauses of an historic number of complaints.  Well, now they are running a new advert for digital tv take-up, and it’s inspired by Ringu “The Ring” of all things!  It’s scary as hell, a child is watching a cookery show with Ansley Harriot in it, then all of a sudden Ansley crawls out of the screen and harrases the poor shivering child!
