Chairman Post

IMGP3259.JPGHad a rather annoying day yesterday. Went to the royal mail sorting office to collect a parcel I had missed. When I saw the package I knew straight away that it was an SATA HD USB2 Adapter I had bought super cheap style from an ebayer based in Hong Kong of all places. Tell you what though, I walked there and I felt a right tit walking the streets while grasping Chairman Mao. Still, it would make a great start to anyones stamp collection. So when I got back and went up to try out the new fangled contraption the obvious happened… somehow, since gutting my old PC the HD had perished. Well, I’m presuming it has, HD Clicks.m4a. Doesn’t sound good does it. Luckily, hitachi’s website has a form for entering the drives serial number and it will tell you whether it qualifies for an RMA. It did! Woo!. Hmm, ah, look at the freaking packaging instructions! Here’s my favorite bit..

Use thick foam rubber to secure the hard drive on all sides during shipment or use a GeoSprings kit (a specially approved box with plastic spacers).

and

DO NOT USE foam peanuts, bubble wrap, cloth, paper, newspaper, or padded envelopes.

Nothing like making things tricky. What I don’t get is, why go to this care?… ITS BROKEN! What the heck is a geosprings kit? And where the heck do you go to buy foam rubber? Grrr

Eddie in Lineker - 41Went to take Eddie for a walk in the country, some place called Lineker (sp?) near Chesterfield. Lovely walk set around a cluster of reservoirs. Anyway, took quite a funny photo, I’ll leave you to come up with the caption.

Hmmm… I’m not sure if that translates outside of the US??

If your hard drive is making that noise, then it is essentially toast – however you may be able to get it working for a few minutes by taking it out, putting it in a sealable waterproof bag and putting it in the freezer overnight. It’s not guaranteed and you’ll only have time to recover the most important of data.

As for the caption – “Does this sign mean anything to you? Thought not.”

Hey!!! You don’t know me, but I am in the process of returning a Hitachi drive myself. I too was baffled by what a GeoSprings kit is. So I googled it and came here. I was wondering how you solved your packaging dilemma and how your overall warranty experience went.

Thanks!

Hi Hagow, I almost gave up trying to find packaging for the HD, I emailed Hitachi several times and they always replied with an automatic response telling me to read the guide on the website, which I had already read.

In fact I had forgotten all about it when we were clearing out the loft and I found a box, which some gadget had come in (can’t remember what it was now!) but it only slight bigger than the HD and quite sturdy, there was also tons of polystyrene from the packaging of various Hi-Fi components there so I cut them up fill in the spaces in the box and pad the HD nicely.

I didn’t know if Hitachi would accept my packaging attempt but only a week or so later I received a replacement HD and guess what, it came in a GeoSprings Kit!

Just this second taken a photo of it so you can see what one looks like (I dunno if that will help you). As you can see it’s pretty disapointing, there’s nothing flashing about this thing, its just 2 thin plastic things shaped to hold the HD away from the edges of the box. Pah.
